Low-strain shear modulus dependence on water content of a natural stiff clay

چکیده
This paper shows the results of an experimental programme aimed at evaluating the low-strain shear modulus of a stiff clay (Boom clay, Belgium) and its dependency on water content changes (or, alternatively, degree of saturation or suction) and hydraulic history. Resonant column and bender element tests were carried out at different hydraulic states. Drying and wetting paths were followed using vapour equilibrium technique, in which samples were allowed to equalise in sealed chambers at controlled relative humidity (44% to 97%). Time domain technique has been used to determine the travel time in bender element tests. The evolution of the shear modulus was carefully monitored along these hydraulic paths. Shear moduli results and their dependence on water content (suction or degree of saturation) and stress/hydraulic history, are discussed and interpreted. In addition, discrepancies observed in the results between the two dynamic techniques are evaluated and discussed.

متن کاملEffects of Degree of Consolidation and Anisotropic Consolidation Stresses on Shear Modulus and Damping Ratio of Cohesive Soils at Low Strain
During consolidation process of saturated cohesive soil the soil stiffness increases. Increase of the effective stress due to dissipation of excess pore pressure causes additional stiffness of soil mass. This phenomenon has a very important effect on the behavior of saturated cohesive soils during dynamic loading. In the current investigation the changes in maximum shear modulus. Gmax and dampi...

Water-repellent soils have a potential as alternative construction materials that will improve conventional geotechnical structures. In this study, the potential of chemically treated water-repellent kaolin clay as a landfill cover material is explored by examining its characteristics including hydraulic and mechanical properties. In order to provide water repellency to the kaolin clay, the sur...

متن کاملMorphology and Melt Rheology of Nylon 11/Clay Nanocomposites
Nylon 11 (PA11)/clay nanocomposites have been prepared by melt-blending, followed by melt-extrusion through a capillary. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the exfoliated clay morphology is dominant for low nanofiller content, while the intercalated one is prevailing for high filler loading. Melt rheological properties of PA11 nanocomposites have been studied in both linear and nonline...
